CHAPTER TEN

Celebration in the House of Neptune

THE warmth and security of the base ship was an indescribable pleasure for Tobias. He was overjoyed when he was told he didn’t have to return to the submersible. Shutting his cabin door firmly behind him, he breathed his first real sigh of relief. It was good to be safe and alone. The young new warrior willed his numb hands to peel the frayed and torn clothing from his body. He was bitterly cold. He climbed into the small shower cubicle and allowed the hot water to cascade down his back. Slowly his fingers began to thaw and the icy feeling that had crept into his bones began to melt. He exhaled. Chaotic thoughts of the battle ran aimlessly through his mind, but with each outgoing breath, he surrendered them. He exited the shower with tingling pink skin and sank deeply into the quilt of feathers on his bed. A real bed, Tobias smiled, not the small mat he was subjected to on the submersible. He cocooned himself in the blankets and fell instantly into a heavy sleep.

Tobias woke to the very gentle rocking of the large vessel on water. He listened for evidence of people close by. He couldn’t hear a sound. He knew there must be activity but down in his little cabin he was away from everyone and everything. Nobody bothered him. He was grateful for the peace. He meditated on the warmth of the quilts, the softness of the pillows and the black, velvety stillness of the room. His cabin had no windows – no natural light at all. It was a cave, a haven of safety in the bowels of the ship where nothing could harm him and nobody needed him.

A light tap at the door roused Tobias from his thoughts. He shifted slightly to flick on the lamp.

“Yes, come in.”

A mass of red curls poked through the doorway. Tobias smiled.

“Hi Sarah.”

“Hi,” she smiled appreciatively. “How are you feeling?”

“Lazy.”

“That’s okay, you’ve earned it.”

“How’s everyone up top?”

“Tired but good. A lot are still finding it hard to believe they can go home.” She perched herself on the small green sofa in the corner of the room and smoothed over the blue velvet of her gown with her hand. “Some of our people were on base for a long time. They are anxious to see their families now. It must be strange for them to adapt when something has been a certain way for so long and then suddenly, in a day, it all changes. It will probably take a little time to believe it is real and that the battle is actually over.”

Tobias sat up in his bed and examined Sarah closely. “And your parents? Have you seen them?”

Sarah’s face flushed with emotion. “No. Apparently they are still in the House of Neptune. They were taken there for healing. Raphael saw them though. He said they were very shaken but they will be okay soon,” said Sarah, her voice catching in her throat.
